At the Shanghai Masters, Andy Murray was able to successfully defend his title againstDavid Ferrer in a 7-5, 6-4 match. The said victory ensures Murray’s ascension in the ATP Rankings, bypassing Roger Federer.
Murray is said to have made the rise to No. 3 one of his main goals he wishes to achieve by the end of the year. By doing so, Murray will push Federer a spot lower, which is also the first time that Federer will not be in the top three spots since 2003.
So far Murray has been quite unbeatable during the Asian leg of the ATP tour and was able to capture consecutive titles, first at Bangkok, then at Tokyo – where he went against Rafael Nadal – and now Shanghai.
Murray has also been successful in winning 25 of his 26 matches since the middle of August. The only loss that Murray has suffered was when he went against Rafael Nadal at the semifinal round of the US Open.
After Murray accepted his trophy on the court, he said a few Chinese words to the spectators, “Da shi, shi bu ke dang.” The said words roughly mean “Masters are unstoppable.”
So far in his career, Murray has reached his highest rank at No. 2 back in 2009. However, he has never really finished a single year higher than No. 4.
This year, Roger Federer will finish his first season without a single Grand Slam title since 2002. He is expected to head over to Basel for the Swiss Indoors but he still has to defend a certain number of points after his victory at the ATP World Tour Finals last year.
