Earlier during the match, the ninth-seeded player, Radwanska, was down 2-0 while fighting off Zvonareva at the Ariake Colosseum. However, she was able to bounce back and won the first set straight off after Zvonareva came across some unforced errors.
According to Radwanska, “I was a little bit nervous at first… Those first two games went by so fast, I was just trying to do my best. I’m just happy that I woke up quickly and won the first set.”
Although Zvonareva made a great come back from a staggering 5-1 deficit during the match against Petra Kvitova in the semi-final round, she was unable to turn the tables against Radwanska. In fact, Radwanska was able to break Zvonareva two times just to take the 5-2 lead. Though Zvonareva held on to win the match’s eight game, Radwanska closed out all possibilities during the first set especially with Zvonareva’s errors.
When asked about the match, Zvonareva said, “I felt like I started out well and then something happened… It was not me on the court anymore. I will think about it and try to figure out what happened but it’s one of those things that can happen to anyone.”
After her victory, Radwanska is projected to rise up the ranks and land at the 12th spot. However, the top eight players are the ones who will qualify for the WTA Championships.
